In the islands, which are surrounded by sea and cut off from land, the conditions are favorable for developing and diversifying a particular population of plants. So in the Northern Sporades there are endemic species, ie. species found only here and nowhere else. More than ten species, subspecies and several varieties have been identified so far as species of endemic flora of the Northern Sporades. At the end of the 80s the fritillarie (Fritillaria sporadum) was discovered in the island of Gioura. A subspecies of Aubrieta the deltoid, is the Aubrieta deltoidea sporadum that grows in isolated parts of Skiathos and Skopelos. In the rugged northern coast of the island of Gioura flourishes the sandwort or Arenaria litoralis, sometimes together with Silene fabaria. Some plants have a very limited distribution and will be seen only in specific regions of the Northern Sporades. Thus, a kind of poppy, the Papaver stipitatum grows only in Skopelos. The Flax (Linum gyaricum) can be found only in Gioura and Kyra Panagia and the nearest relative of the white flax (Linum leucanthum) is located in mainland Greece. The Silene (linifolia sporadum) is considered relative isolation of the species found widely in the mainland. The bells are also some endemic species in the Northern Sporades. In Skiathos and Skopelos the bells Campanula sciathia and Campanula scopelia thrive. Other species are the C. reiseri in Gioura and Kyra Panagia and the C. rechingeri in Piperi island. A rare bluebell, the Centaurea rechingeri can be found only in Gioura and Kyra Panagia and it is a characteristic plant of the endemic species of the Northern Sporades, without being decisive in shaping the flora of this region, as well as other endemic species. There are other species that are endemic not only in the Northern Sporades, but one or more parts of the Aegean. Here is the Cretan shadbush (Amelanchier cretica) that is found in Crete, Gioura and a small part of the mainland,or the bedstraw (Galium reiseri) that grows in Kyra Panagia, in Gioura in Alonissos and Skyros.
