The Peristera ancient shipwreck

A one of a kind classical shipwreck of a great size has been discovered in Alonissos, lying in the narrow zone formed between Peristera and Stenivala.
This unique shipwreck was discovered by Kostas Mayrikis, a resident of Alonissos, and he was also the one that reported the find to the Archaeological Service in 1984. After years of efforts, in 1991 there was a preliminary surface research from Mrs Elpida Hatzidaki and the archaelogists Vasilis Koniordos and Ilias Spondilis. Their discovery? A ship of 11 tons constructed in the 400 B.C. with 3-4 thousand amfora in its hold. Another theory stating that the Ancient Greeks were not capable of building ships of such size was brought down. The amphora were scattered on the sea floor, covering an area of 22-30 metres in length and 10 metres in width. The depth of the find ranges from 22 – 30 metres. From the position of the amphora, scientists were able to visualise the ships shape.
Amphora were laid in three layers in the following manner. In the bottom part the amphora were laid either on wooden supports or in sand.
This first layer formed gaps. The layer above it would fill in the gaps and form a tight cluster.
The amphora contained wine that emanated from Chalkidiki (Mendi) and from Skopelos (Peparithos). Both these regions were important wine producing cities of the ancient world. Amphora are dated around 400B.C. The shipwreck was photographed and recorded in its original form.
